  9. Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on schedule on February 3 at
  10. 1210 UTC from the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.

  12. The six person crew includes Russian Cosmonaut Sergei K. Krikalev,
  13. U5MIR.  In April 1993, Krikalev was assigned as a prime mission
  14. specialist for the flight.  Krikalev is best known for his career
  15. aboard the Russian Space Station MIR.  With the completion of his
  16. second MIR mission, he has logged more than 1 year and 3 months in
  17. space, and has conducted seven EVAs.

  19. The STS-60 mission objectives include microgravity experiments to be
  20. conducted in Spacehab-2, as well as the Wake Shield Facility which
  21. is a joint project between NASA and the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center
  22. of the University of Houston.  The Wake Shield will test the
  23. creation of an ultra-high vacuum in which to produce extremely pure
  24. semiconductor thin film crystals.  Additionally, joint US/Russian
  25. sponsored science activities will be included in the mission.

  27. The STS-60 mission will be the first joint US/Russian human space
  28. flight since the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, and the first to
  29. involve Russian and American space travelers on the same crew.
